Turn an Old Computer into a NAS Device with BitTorrent Sync

Are you tired of having too many files scattered across different devices, making it difficult to access and share them? Do you have an old computer collecting dust in your closet or attic? Look no further! With this tutorial, you can turn that old computer into a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device running BitTorrent Sync.

BitTorrent Sync is a powerful tool that allows you to sync folders between machines using Peer-to-Peer technology. This means that only people with access to your 'Secret' can store your data, and it never stores your data on a stranger's computer. With this setup, you'll have a secure and reliable way to share files between devices.

To get started, you'll need an old computer with a 64-bit processor (recommended) and at least one hard drive installed. Make sure the hard drive is connected to the computer and that the BIOS is set to boot from the thumb drive by default.

Once you have everything set up, plug in your thumb drive, turn on your computer, and copy the FreeNAS image using the instructions provided on this page. The tutorial was written using FreeNAS-8.3.1-RELEASE-p2.

After installing FreeNAS, navigate to the left column and select 'Account' > 'Admin Account' > 'Change password'. This will bring you to the GUI that you see pictured below. Enter the IP address into a browser on a different computer on the same network, and you'll be taken to the setup wizard.

From there, follow the prompts to set up your admin password and configure your hard drives. You should see an alert in the top right corner indicating that FreeNAS is ready to use.
